Our Suggestions for Securing Your PremisesClick on any photo to enlarge Here are some cost effective simple ways to protect your premises against burglars and intruders. Windows - Internal ProtectionAll ground floor windows and other windows that are accessible from low roofs, trees, walls, pipes etc. must be fitted with a Homeguard Grille. If the windows are in bedrooms or any other habitable room on an upper floor (other than a kitchen or bathroom) at least one in each room measuring at least 450mm by 450mm must be removable and preferably fitted with a keyless locking kit to enable it to be quickly and easily removed in case of fire. All other windows in the premises should be fitted with key operated window locks. Windows - External ProtectionFit Homeguard Mesh Grilles or Solid Steel Bars. Mesh grilles are ideal for protecting the windows from missiles and animals. DoorsThe glazed part on any external door should be fitted with a Homeguard Grille on the inside. Any plywood panel should be reinforced with a Homeguard purpose made reinforcing kit to prevent it being kicked in or cut out. The door must be secured with a British Standard 5 or 7 lever deadlock or else two key operated locking bolts. Hinge bolts should be fitted to protect the hinges. The door frame should be fitted with Birmingham Bars on the outside to prevent it being attacked with a sharp instrument. For added security fit an anti-jemmy strip on the outside to the door stile. Wooden ShedsFit Homeguard Grilles or Bars on the inside of the windows and secure the door with a case hardened hasp and staple with a good quality close shackled padlock, or a drop bar across the door. Ensure the base is properly fixed to the ground to prevent the shed being tipped over. Secure RoomA small room or cupboard can be converted into a 'secure room' as follows. Unless the wall are brick, line the walls all round with 20 gauge sheet metal. Line the back of the door with 20 gauge sheet metal. Fit a 5 or 7 lever British Standard deadlock to the door and hinge bolts to protect the hinges. Ensure the frame is securely fixed to the walls - fit extra frame bolts if necessary and Birmingham Bars. Fit a Homeguard Heavy Duty grille to the inside of any window. This secure room is ideal for keeping valuable items such as electrical goods, cameras, valuable household possessions etc, if you are going away for any length of time.
